Southwest Images
I hope you enjoy this online gallery of my work done across North America beginning in 1994 to the present time. All images are protected by U.S. Copyright laws; no image may be reproduced without my written permission. All rights reserved.
My career in photography of the male figure began by happenstance with my tentmates fooling around with a Brownie Starflash. How My Career Started
If you would like to see some early efforts, there was:
Me at an Early Age
My Buddy Chet
Getting Dressed after a wild shoot
Early Figure Study with Pinecones
My First Cowboy
My Second Cowboy
On Deck
Many sprained ankles and two snake bites later, I now spend my time roaming unscuffled reaches of the high country. Typically a day consists of making early arrangements with my models for what is inevitably a long drive to a remote site, usually on back roads with no services. Watching me set up my photographic equipment is always a laugh for my models, (Ok, that's not really me, but I like the picture). Then there is arranging for the comfort of my models -- finding shade for breaks, water, etc., takes more time. An outdoor shoot is usually slated for a few hours, but I cannot remember the last time we left before sunset; none of us has ever regretted waiting out the last light of a southwest day.
Athough camera equipment does not make a great photograph, fine bright optics help a lot. I am currently shooting a Contax G2 using a combination of remarkable Zeiss lenses - 90mm, 45mm and 28mm. A lot of photographers, including me, believe it is the best 35mm rangefinder in the world.
Potential SWPG Models
I am always looking for new models for my work. Currently I am shooting principally in a half-dozen southwest United States locations - in California, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. I also travel to the east coast from time to time for specialized shoots. Qualities I look for in models include a fit, trim body, enthusiasm, and a willingness to be creative. Some of my best shots have evolved from ideas given me by men I have worked with.
